Research and innovation leadership

Key policy questions

Across the globe, different stakeholders are striving to maximise the impact of quantum technology by leveraging strategic investments, establishing essential infrastructure, implementing policy measures, and employing other mechanisms. Research and innovation (R&I) leadership is crucial for driving progress in quantum technology and ensuring that societies reap its full benefits. It is one of the cornerstones of national quantum technology strategies, shaping how countries position themselves in the global quantum technology ecosystem. R&I policy plays a vital role in ensuring that funding is allocated effectively, research activities are aligned with national priorities, and scientific and engineering breakthroughs are translated into real-world applications. We analyse the various trends and developments for advancing quantum R&I, including the differing approaches adopted by countries in their national strategies, R&I activities, support for industry, and funding mechanisms.

Note: During the initial pilot phase of our work, QTOPS is concentrating on quantum technology education, skills and workforce development. Over time, our activities will expand to cover additional policy areas, including research and innovation leadership. Watch this space for future updates.
